Holy Family flight to Egypt

St.Catherine, Alexandria

The flight into Egypt is a biblical event described in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 2:13-23), in which Joseph fled to Egypt with his wife Mary and infant son Jesus after a visit by Magi because they learnt that King Herod intends to kill the infants of that area.

DAY 1 – CAIRO
Upon arrival in Cairo, Meet and Assist. Transfer to your hotel for overnight.

DAY 2 – CAIRO
After breakfast, drive to Old Cairo and visit the Hanging Church or El- Muallaqa (said to have been built between the end of the 3rd and the beginning of the 4th century and dedicated to the Virgin Mary), the Greek Church of St. George, the Church of the Virgin (9th century), the Church of St. Sergius (a typical example of the Coptic Churches and monasteries, it was founded at the end of the 4th century and stands on a crypt that is said to have sheltered the Holy Family during their flight from Egypt) and St. Barbra’s Church (built between the 4th and 5th centuries, it still has an ancient chapel in which the relics of Saint John, to whom it was dedicated, are preserved). Return to your hotel for overnight.

Day 3 ST. CATHERINE
After breakfast, drive to the St. Catherine. Transfer to your hotel for overnight.

Day 4 ST. Catherine
Wake up in the early morning to climb Moses Mountain. It was on this mountain that Moses received the Ten Commandments. It lies south of St. Catherines Monastery and rises to a height of 7,497 feet.
This hike is only for people who are very fit and experienced in hiking.
Descend for breakfast at the hotel. Visit the monastery of St. Catherine, which sits at an altitude of 5,150 feet on the reputed site of the Burning Bush. In the afternoon, return to Cairo for overnight.

DAY 5 – CAIRO
Drive to El Muqqatam hills and the Convent of Father Semaan. The convent is built on the spot where Father Semaan regularly prayed to move the mountain. The convent is built from stones of El Muqqatam and is quite famous for its unique architecture. Continue to the Matariyah area in Cairo to see Marys tree, so called because the Holy family is believed to have rested in its shade. Return to your hotel for overnight.

Day 6 ALEXANDRIA
Drive to Alexandria. On your way, visit the Monastery of Wadi El Natroun, where the Holy Family stopped after crossing the Rosetta branch of the Nile to the western Delta. Heading south into Wadi El Natroun (then called Al Asqeet) in the western desert, visit the Monastery of Al-Baramose (the Romans), and the Monastery of Abu Makar. Next, drive to King Mariut to visit the Monastery of St. Mena. Continue to Alexandria for overnight.

Day 7 CAIRO
After breakfast, visit the church of St. Mark. The Church of St. Mark is built as the pillar to the lord, at its borders. St. Mark initiated the spread of Christianity in Egypt, beginning in Alexandria. On to visit the catacombs and the Alexandria Library.
Drive back to Cairo for overnight.

Day 8 CAIRO
Drive to Giza to visit the Pyramids and the sphinx. Continue with a visit to the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities. Among the fascinating exhibits, see the treasures of the tomb of Tutankhamun. Return back to your hotel for overnight.

Day 9 CAIRO
Free day at Lesiure

Day 10 Cairo
Transfer from hotel to the airport for departure flight.
